Why small bars cost more per gram

Making a 1-gram bar takes almost as much work as making a 100-gram bar: the blank must be cut, struck, inspected, packed in a tamper-evident card and shipped. Those fixed costs are spread over very little gold, so the premium per gram is high. On a kilo bar the same costs are spread over 1,000 grams. That is why investors who want to keep costs low buy the largest size they can comfortably afford — while still keeping enough flexibility to sell part of their holding later. Many people split the difference with several 50 g or 100 g bars, or 10-tola bars in South Asia and the Gulf.

Minted vs. cast bars

  • Minted (stamped) bars are cut from rolled gold strip and struck with a design, like a coin. They have sharp edges, a polished finish and usually come sealed in a card with an assay certificate. Most bars under 100 g are minted.
  • Cast bars are made by pouring molten gold into a mould. They look more rustic, with rounded edges and a slightly uneven surface, and they are cheaper to produce. Larger bars — 250 g, 500 g, 1 kg and the 400-ounce wholesale bar — are usually cast.

Both contain the same gold. Choose the one you like and that sells easily where you live.

Choosing a trustworthy brand

Stick to bars from refiners on the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) Good Delivery list or from government mints. Well-known names include PAMP, Valcambi, Argor-Heraeus, Heraeus, Metalor, the Perth Mint, the Royal Canadian Mint and the Royal Mint. Their bars carry a serial number, weight and fineness (usually 999.9), and dealers worldwide recognise them, which keeps your buy-back price high. Unbranded or unknown bars may need to be assayed before a dealer will buy them, which costs time and money.

Keep sealed bars in their original packaging and store the certificate safely. If a bar has been removed from its card, it is still gold, but some buyers will offer less.

The 400-ounce Good Delivery bar

The bars that move between central banks and bullion banks in London weigh about 400 troy ounces (12.4 kg) and must meet strict LBMA standards for purity, shape and markings. At today’s price one such bar is worth roughly 1,620,656 USD. Individuals rarely buy them directly; gold ETFs and vault services hold them on investors’ behalf.

Storing bars safely

Gold bars are compact — a kilo bar is about the size of a smartphone — but valuable, so plan storage before you buy. A hidden home safe covered by your insurer, a bank safe-deposit box or professional allocated storage in a vault are the usual options; each has costs and trade-offs explained in our beginner’s guide to buying gold.

Selling gold bars

Recognised bars are easy to sell to bullion dealers, refiners and many jewelers. Expect the best offers for well-known brands in original packaging. Ask for a price per bar, compare it with the gold value in the table above and get two or three quotes. If you need cash only for part of your holding, smaller bars let you sell exactly what you need. You can value any weight in any currency with our gold calculator, or compare bars with gold coins.
