What is scrap gold worth?
Scrap gold is valued only for its gold content. Buyers melt it down, so design, brand and stones usually add nothing. The melt value is the sum of weight × purity × spot price for each piece; refiners and shops then pay a percentage of it — often 70–85% at a pawn shop or "we buy gold" store and 90–97% at a refinery or specialist dealer.
Tips before you sell
- Sort pieces by karat and weigh each group separately.
- Remove stones — they add weight but are not paid as gold.
- Ask the buyer for their price per gram for each karat, then compare with the melt value here.
Frequently asked questions
Why do buyers pay less than the spot price?
They cover assay, refining, transport and their own profit. Getting several quotes is the easiest way to raise your payout.
