How Much Is 14K Gold Worth Today? Price per Gram, Ounce and Typical Items
14K gold value today
The table uses the live spot price. "Metal value" is what the pure gold inside 14K alloy is worth; the second column shows the range a reputable buyer typically pays.

|---|---|---|
| 1 gram | 76.37 USD | 53.46 – 68.74 USD |
| 1 pennyweight (dwt) | 118.78 USD | 83.14 – 106.90 USD |
| 1 troy ounce | 2,375.51 USD | 1,662.86 – 2,137.96 USD |
| 1 tola | 890.82 USD | 623.57 – 801.73 USD |

How the value is calculated
14K means 14 parts gold out of 24, or 58.33%. In practice jewelry is made to a fineness of 585 (58.5%), slightly above the theoretical value so that it never falls short of the legal standard. The formula is simple:
Value = weight in grams × 0.585 × gold price per gram
So a 10-gram 14K chain contains 5.85 grams of pure gold, worth about 763.74 USD today. The other 41.5% is copper, silver, zinc or nickel, which have almost no resale value.
What typical 14K items are worth
Weights vary a lot with style and length, so these are only rough ranges. The value column is the metal value at today’s price; weigh your own item for an exact figure.
| Item | Typical weight | Metal value |
|---|---|---|
| Thin chain, 18 in (45 cm) | 3–5 g | 229.12 – 381.87 USD |
| Medium curb or rope chain, 20 in | 8–15 g | 611.00 – 1,145.62 USD |
| Heavy Cuban chain, 22 in | 30–80 g | 2,291.23 – 6,109.95 USD |
| Plain wedding band | 2–6 g | 152.75 – 458.25 USD |
| Men’s signet or class ring | 8–20 g | 611.00 – 1,527.49 USD |
| Small stud earrings (pair) | 1–2 g | 76.37 – 152.75 USD |
| Hoop earrings (pair) | 2–6 g | 152.75 – 458.25 USD |
| Bracelet | 5–20 g | 381.87 – 1,527.49 USD |
Hollow chains and hoops weigh much less than they look, and stones are not gold: a ring with a large stone can weigh several grams more than the gold it contains. A jeweler can weigh the stone separately or estimate it.
14K, 585 and 583: are they the same?
Yes. 14K is the US and UK style mark, 585 is the European fineness mark and 583 is an older mark (the exact 14/24) used on Soviet and some older European pieces. All three are 14-karat gold. "14KP" means "plumb", a guarantee that the gold is not below 14K. Marks such as "14K GF", "14K GP" or "14K HGE" mean the item is only gold-filled or plated — see gold-plated vs gold-filled vs solid gold.
How much will a buyer pay for 14K gold?
- Refiners and online buyers: often 85–95% of the metal value, especially for larger lots.
- Local gold buyers and jewelers: usually 70–90%.
- Pawn shops: often 50–70%, because they also offer loans and carry more risk.
- Mail-in kits and "cash for gold" events: can be the lowest; always know your number before you send anything.

Is 14K gold a good choice?
For everyday jewelry, yes: it is harder and more scratch-resistant than 18K or 22K, it costs less, and it is the most popular karat in the United States. For investment, it is not ideal: you pay for design and labour that you do not get back when you sell. If your goal is to own gold as an asset, compare gold coins and gold bars, which sell much closer to the spot price.
