Gold IRA Explained: Rules, Costs, Eligible Coins and Red Flags (2026)

What a gold IRA is

An Individual Retirement Account (IRA) is a US tax-advantaged retirement account. Most IRAs hold stocks, bonds and funds. A gold IRA — more accurately a precious-metals IRA — is a self-directed IRA that holds physical gold, silver, platinum or palladium instead. It follows the same tax rules as any other IRA: traditional (tax-deductible contributions, taxed withdrawals) or Roth (after-tax contributions, tax-free qualified withdrawals).

Three parties are involved:

  • The custodian: a bank or IRS-approved trust company that administers the account and files reports.
  • The dealer: the company that sells the metal to your IRA.
  • The depository: an approved vault that stores the metal on behalf of the custodian.

Which metals the IRS allows

Under section 408(m) of the tax code, most collectibles are banned from IRAs, but bullion that meets fineness standards is allowed:

MetalMinimum finenessCommon eligible products
Gold99.5%American Gold Eagle (specifically allowed despite being 22K), American Buffalo, Canadian Maple Leaf, Austrian Philharmonic, Australian Kangaroo, bars from accredited refiners
Silver99.9%American Silver Eagle, Maple Leaf, bars from accredited refiners
Platinum99.95%American Platinum Eagle, accredited bars
Palladium99.95%Accredited coins and bars

Not allowed: the South African Krugerrand and British Sovereign (22K and not specifically exempted), rare or numismatic coins, and jewelry. Our gold coin guide lists the purity of each popular coin.

Why you cannot keep IRA gold at home

The metal must be held by a trustee or approved depository. Promoters of "home storage" or "checkbook" gold IRAs claim a loophole, but the US Tax Court ruled in 2021 (McNulty v. Commissioner) that taking personal possession of IRA metals counts as a distribution: the value becomes taxable, possibly with a 10% early-withdrawal penalty. If you want gold in your own safe, buy it outside an IRA.

Contribution limits and rollovers in 2026

  • Annual limit: $7,500 across all your IRAs, plus a $1,100 catch-up contribution if you are 50 or older (IRS Notice 2025-67).
  • Direct transfer: moving money from an existing IRA to a gold IRA custodian, trustee to trustee, is not taxed and is not limited in number.
  • Rollover from a 401(k): usually possible from a former employer’s plan; ask for a direct rollover so no tax is withheld.
  • Indirect (60-day) rollover: you receive the money and must redeposit it within 60 days; only one per 12 months is allowed across IRAs. A missed deadline makes it taxable.
  • Required minimum distributions: traditional gold IRAs must begin withdrawals at age 73 (75 for people born in 1960 or later). You can take cash by selling metal or take the coins themselves as a taxable distribution.

What a gold IRA really costs

CostTypical range
Account setup$50 – $300 once
Annual custodian fee$75 – $300
Storage and insurance$100 – $300 per year, or a percentage of value
Dealer markup over spotFrom about 3% on bullion to 30% or more on "premium" coins
Selling backUsually below spot; ask before you buy

The markup is the biggest cost, and it is often hidden in the price. A 20% markup means gold must rise 20% just for you to break even. Always compare the coin price with the live spot price and ask for the dealer’s buy-back price in writing.

Red flags

  • Pressure to decide quickly, fear-based marketing or warnings that your bank savings will be "confiscated".
  • Offers of "free silver" or cash bonuses, which are usually paid for through a higher markup.
  • Steering toward proof, "limited mintage" or semi-numismatic coins with large premiums.
  • Home-storage IRA pitches.
  • Refusal to state the price over spot or the buy-back price.
  • Recommendations to put most of your retirement savings into metals.

Cheaper alternatives

If you only want gold’s price exposure in retirement, a gold ETF bought inside an ordinary IRA or 401(k) costs a fraction of a percent per year, with no setup or storage fees and tiny spreads. Mining stocks are another option, though they behave more like shares. A physical gold IRA makes most sense for people who specifically want physical bullion in a tax-advantaged account and accept the extra cost.

Is a gold IRA right for you?

Many advisers suggest keeping precious metals to a modest share of retirement savings, often in the 5–10% range, as diversification. Run the numbers with our gold investment calculator, read how to buy gold safely, and consider speaking with a fee-only financial adviser or tax professional. Frequently asked questions

Can I hold my IRA gold at home?
No. IRA metals must be held by a trustee or approved depository; taking possession is treated as a taxable distribution.
Are Krugerrands allowed in an IRA?
No. The Krugerrand is 22K and is not specifically exempted, unlike the American Gold Eagle.
How much can I put in a gold IRA in 2026?
Up to $7,500 in new contributions across all your IRAs, or $8,600 if you are 50 or older. Transfers and rollovers from existing accounts are not limited by this cap.
Is a gold IRA a good investment?
It can diversify retirement savings, but fees and markups are high. Compare it with a gold ETF in a regular IRA before deciding.
